The Prosecutor's Office of the Donetsk People's Republic has approved the indictment in the criminal case against 48-year-old US citizen Charles Albert Carter. He is charged in absentia under part 3 of Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (participation of a mercenary in an armed conflict).
According to investigators, from March 2022 to August 2024, Carter arrived on the territory of Ukraine and voluntarily joined the 49th separate infantry battalion “Carpathian Sich” of the Ukrainian Armed Forces as a mercenary. The American participated in military operations on the Ukrainian side at various points of battle contact and received the reward to the amount which is equivalent to more than 2.3 million rubles.
Before coming to Ukraine Carter had military experience and was a NATO instructor.
Carter has been put on the international wanted list, and the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention in absentia against him.
The criminal case was sent to the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic for consideration on the merits.
