On Extradition to Russia from Austria of Russian Citizen Eduard Scherbina Accused of Theft of Budgetary Funds

Today, on November 20, 2015, at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of the Republic of Austria will extradite to Russia a Russian citizen Eduard Scherbina.

Investigation authorities accuse him of committing crimes under Part 4 of Article 159 (fraud committed by an organized group on an especially large scale), Part 3 of Article 33, Part 1 of Article 327 (organization of forgery of other official document granting the right with the purpose of its use), as well as Part 3 of Article 30 and Part 4 of Article 159 (attempted fraud committed by an organized group on an especially large scale) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

A criminal case against Mr. Scherbina is now examined by the Investigation Department of the Directorate of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for the Krasnodar Territory.

According to investigators, from September 2010 to August 2011, Mr. Scherbina has committed a theft of funds from the federal budget as part of an organized group in the amount of more than 310 million roubles and attempted theft of more than 57 million roubles. With this purpose, he has submitted to the tax authorities the documents containing false information on the right of several limited liability companies for reimbursement of value added tax.

Given the fact that Mr. Scherbina disappeared from criminal prosecution, fled from criminal prosecution, he was put on the federal wanted list in September, 2011, and in December, 2011 – on international wanted list.

In June, 2015, he was detained on the territory of Austria.

In July, 2015, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation submitted to the competent authorities of the Republic of Austria a request on his extradition to Russia, which was successfully satisfied in November, 2015.

Accompanied by the special escort, Mr. Scherbina will be transferred from Vienna to Moscow.
