Today, July 2, 2015, upon the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of the Kingdom of Spain will extradite the citizen of the Russian Federation, Suzanna Gubasheva, to Russia.
She is accused by the investigative authorities of committing criminal offences stipulated by Article 126 (2 “a”, “c”, “d”, “g”, and “h”) (abduction committed by a group of persons by prior collusion, with the use of violence with danger for human life and health, with the use of weapons, against two persons, out of mercenary motives), Article 162 (2) (robbery with the use of violence dangerous to human life or health, with the threat of using such violence, by a group of persons by prior collusion, with the use of objects used as weapons), Article 132 (2 “b” and “c”)(violent sexual actions, with the use of the violence and with the threat of its use against the victim, committed by a group of persons by prior collusion, connected with the threat of murder) and Article 163 (2 “a” and “c”) (extortion committed by a group of persons by prior collusion with the use of violence) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
The Soviet Interdistrict Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Novosibirsk Region is inquiring into the criminal case against Ms Gubasheva.
The investigation revealed that in December 1997, in an apartment in Novosibirsk, Ms Gubasheva and her accomplices committed violent sexual acts against two men, recording their actions in photographs and on video. Then, threatening to kill them, they demanded 21,000 US dollars from their victims. The members of the organized gang stated that if the victims failed to comply with this demand, they would distribute the photographs and video material. They then bound the victims and stole 3000 roubles, 200 US dollars, a mobile telephone, a sable fur hat, and a number of documents.
Since Ms Gubasheva absconded from criminal prosecution, she was placed on the federal wanted list in February 1998, and then on the international wanted list in January 2011.
In May 2001, Ms Gubasheva, under an assumed name and posing as a citizen of Greece, travelled to Sweden where, after 5 years, she was granted Swedish citizenship.
In June 2013, the accused was arrested in Italy.
In July 2013, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation submitted a request to the competent authorities of the Republic of Italy for her extradition to Russia. However, Ms Gubasheva, who had been placed under house arrest, jumped out of a window and absconded from the Italian law enforcement authorities, as a result of which the Russian request was not considered on the merits.
Having returned to Sweden, Gubasheva changed her name again and was issued a new passport as a Swedish citizen.
In April 2014, she was arrested in Latvia, but was released from custody due to the expiry of the limitation period for criminal prosecution under the laws of the country.
In September 2014, Gubasheva was arrested in Spain.
At this time, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation submitted a request to the Ministry of Justice of the Kingdom of Spain for her extradition to Russia, which was granted in June 2015.
Today, Suzanna Gubasheva will be extradited to Russia under the escort of officers of the Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia and the Russian National Central Bureau of INTERPOL.
