- The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation
Today, on October 24, 2014, the Court of Appeal of Lyon (France) by its decision recommended granting the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation for the extradition of a citizen of the Republic of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Ablyazov to be prosecuted and brought to trial.
The preliminary investigation bodies accuse the former Minister of Energy, Industry and Trade of Kazakhstan Ablyazov of committing a number of serious crimes related to property and in the area of economic activity in the territory of the Russian Federation causing damage of over USD 5 billion.
The representative of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation participated in the hearings on the extradition request. He delivered the charge imposed on Ablyazov, explained in detail the provisions of the Russian criminal law, criminal procedure and criminal and penal legislation, answered questions of the court and lawyers refuting their arguments of the political nature of Ablyazov’s prosecution.
As a result, the court and the French Prosecutor's Office supported the position of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation.
This is the second judgment delivered by the French judicial authorities (the first one was delivered by the Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence on January 9) this year, which recognizes that the request of the Prosecutor General of Russia for the extradition of Ablyazov is fully consistent with international law and Russian legislation.
