The Russian Prosecutor General Yuri Chaika opened the Baikal International Conference of Prosecutors in Irkutsk

Today, on August 26, 2014, the two-day international conference on the Role of Prosecutors in the Fight against Transnational Organized Crime: National Experience and International Cooperation began its work in Irkutsk.

The international conference was held by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation in conjunction with the International Association of Prosecutors and the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors.

The conference under the chairmanship of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika, chairman of the Coordinating Council of Prosecutors General of the Commonwealth of Independent States, was attended by the President of the International Association of Prosecutors Gerhard Jarosch (Austria), President of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors Antonio Mura (Italy), President of the Conference of Visegrad Group Prosecutors General Peter Polt, delegations from the Republic of Belarus, Hungary, Kazakhstan, People's Republic of China, Mongolia, Republic of Serbia, Republic of Tajikistan, Czech Republic, and Swiss Confederation.

The conference participants discussed the activity of prosecutors to combat transnational crime, including the functions and powers of the prosecutors in the fight against human trafficking and illegal migration, ways to improve prosecutorial activities in the field of combating illicit trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, as well as the role of prosecutors in the fight against money laundering.

The President of the International Association of Prosecutors Gerhard Jarosch thanked Yuri Chaika in his opening remarks for the opportunity to attend the conference, at which a number of issues relevant to the prosecutors all over the world would be discussed. He noted that new threats and challenges, including those related to money laundering, required consolidation of the prosecutorial community. During his speech, Gerhard Jarosch expressed particular appreciation for the invitation to Irkutsk where the world famous Lake Baikal is situated. The President of the International Association of Prosecutors wished the conference participants fruitful work on exchange of experience in combating transnational organized crime.

Also, Antonio Mura, Peter Polt, Prosecutor General of Mongolia Dambiyn Dorligjav, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Belarus Aleksandr Konyuk, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Supreme People’s Prosecutor’s Office of the People's Republic of China Zhang Deli, Prosecutor  General of the Republic of Kazakhstan Askhat Daulbaev, Deputy Public Attorney of the Republic of Serbia Djordje Ostojic, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Tajikistan Sherkhon Salimzoda, Prosecutor General of Hungary Peter Polt, Federal Prosecutor, Head of the Terrorism and Crime Division of the General Prosecutor’s Office of the Swiss Confederation Patrick Lamont.

During the first working day of the conference, there will be a series of bilateral meetings of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation with foreign partners where cooperation agreements will be signed.
