On the extradition of Ivan Savkic accused of drug smuggling from Ecuador to Russia
Text

Today, on July 20, 2014, at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of the Republic of Ecuador extradited to Russia a native of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, citizen of the Republic of Serbia Ivan Savkic. He is accused of committing crimes under Art. 188 Part 4 (drug smuggling), Art. 30 Part 4, Art. 228.1 Part 3 paragraphs a, d (preparation to large-scale illegal sale of drugs by an organized group) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

The criminal case against Savkic is pending by the Investigative Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation.

The investigation found that in October 2011 Savkic, being an organizer and leader of a criminal group, smuggled cocaine from the Republic of Ecuador to the Russian Federation in especially big amount and sold it illegally in Russia.

Since Savkic fled from criminal prosecution, in December 2012, the preventive measures in the form of remand in custody were imposed against him, and at the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation Savkic was put on the international wanted list. After establishment of the Savkic’s location in the Republic of Ecuador, in December 2012, the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation forwarded to the competent authorities of that state a request for his extradition to Russia, which was approved by the President of the Republic of Ecuador in May 2014.

It should be noted that the advocacy of Savkic used all possible legal means to avoid the extradition or to delay it maximally. However, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation with the active assistance of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Ecuador had consistently worked during a year and a half for the appearance of Savkic before the Russian justice.

Today Ivan Savkic was extradited to Russia.
