Extradition and rendering legal assistance in criminal matters organization issues were discussed in the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation

A meeting on practices of extradition and rendering legal assistance in criminal matters organization was held in the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, chaired by the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Zvyagintsev. A number of prosecutors of constituent entities of the Russian Federation and specialized prosecutors of equivalent rank have participated in the event. 

The participants of the meeting have stated that international cooperation of prosecutorial agencies in the sphere in question is progressively extended, new functions are added, in particular, legal assistance in administrative matters, extradition and admission by the Russian Federation of persons suffering from mental disorders in respect of whom proceedings relating to the imposition of coercive measures of a medical nature are being conducted. 

The meeting has also addressed organizational problems and shortfalls that are encountered in the process of the mentioned procedures, as well as positive working experience in a number or prosecutorial offices of constituent entities of the Russian Federation and specialized prosecutorial offices. 

Means of improvement in the effectiveness of work in the sphere of extradition and rendering legal assistance in criminal matters were produced at the meeting as well. 

As a follow-up to the meeting, it is planned to prepare an information note on practices of extradition and rendering legal assistance in criminal matters organization by prosecutorial authorities and to address it to all of the prosecutors. 

The Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, as the competent authority for implementing obligations and realization of rights, arising out of international treaties and the Russian Federation legislation concerning criminal proceedings, is currently maintaining collaboration in the sphere of extradition and rendering legal assistance with the competent authorities of nearly 80 States, and handles up to 10 thousand requests, both Russian and foreign, of extradition and legal assistance in criminal matters annually.
