Today, June 11, 2014, according to the demand of the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of Greece will extradite Nikolay Meladze to Russia for the time required for investigation.
Bodies conducting investigation accuse him of committing crimes set out in part 1 of the Article 209 (Creation of a stable armed group (band) with the aim of assaulting individuals or organizations, and also operation of such a group (band), participation in it and in its assaults), part 3 of the Article 222 (Illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or bearing of firearms, its basic parts, ammunition, explosives, or explosive device, committed by an organized group), paragraph (a), part 4 of the Article 162 (Robbery with violence, that is, an assault with the purpose of stealing other people's property, committed with violence which threatens human life and health, committed with the use of weapons or objects used as a weapons, with an illegal intrusion in a home, premises, or any other storehouse, by an organized group, on a particular large scale), and also of two crimes set out in the Article 317 (Encroachment on the life of an officer of a law-enforcement body, for the purpose of obstructing the lawful activity of said persons to protect the public order and security) of the Criminal Code Of the Russian Federation.
The criminal proceedings against Meladze are conducted by the Central Department of Investigation of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in Moscow.
The initial investigation disclosed that in April 2006 was established a criminal group that committed a number of armed violent assaults against citizens with the aim to take over their possessions on a large scale. Meladze assumed control of the band. Moreover, he committed murders of Inspector of militia's Patrol and Inspection Service of Public Security of Departments of Internal Affairs in Chertanovo Tsentralnoye District, Moscow and of police officer of independent company of militia's Patrol and Inspection Service of the said unit.
A federal investigation was launched against the mentioned person in May, 2006, and international investigation in December, 2006.
In December, 2010 Meladze was detained in Hellenic Republic for committing crimes in the Greek territory and sentenced to 10 years of deprivation of liberty.
In January, 2013 the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation transmitted the request to the Ministry of Justice, Transparency and Human Rights of Hellenic Republic for extradition of Meladze for three months, which was granted in May, 2014.
Today, escorted by the representatives of Federal Penal Correction Service of the Russian Federation and Russian INTERPOL bureau, Nikolay Meladze will be extradited to Russia.
