Concerning request on extradition of Russian citizen Sergey Polonsky from the Kingdom of Cambodia
Text

The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation received the ruling of the Court of Appeal of Phnom Penh dated January 13, 2014, in which the results of hearings in private held on January 09, 2014, on the extradition of Sergey Polonsky to Russia, were provided.

According to the ruling, the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and recommendation on extradition of Polonsky of the Prosecutor General's Office at the Court of Appeal of Phnom Penh made on its basis were found legal.

However, considering the fact that Polonsky is accused of committing crimes against citizens of Cambodia within its territory, his extradition to Russia was delayed until court of Preah Sihanouk province passed judgment on this case. Moreover, norms of law, similar to those, the court relied upon to pass this judgment, also are in the Russian legislation.

At the same time the court sustained the motion of Polonsky to release him from custody on recognizance.

At that, pursuant to the court ruling, lawyers of Polonsky asked the court to refuse to extradite him. But representative of prosecutor's office of Cambodia stated that the crimes, Polonsky is accused of in Russia, are also crimes in accordance with the Criminal Code of Cambodia.

Thus, information about refusal to extradite Polonsky to Russia, which was spread by different Russian mass media, as well as information about termination of criminal proceedings against him in Cambodia, does not reflect the actual situation.
