Today the head of the Main Department of the international legal cooperation of the General Prosecutor's office of Russia Sahak Karapetyan handed over to the representative of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Russian Federation Longina Putka copies of the materials of the criminal case № 159 (the "Katyn") which was investigated by the Main military Prosecutor's office of Russia.
The transferred 11 volumes contain requests to the Main Information Centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation, certificates of criminal records and the places of burial of military prisoners.

The criminal case on the fact of discovery in the vicinities of the city of Kharkov of mass burials of the remains of Polish military servicemen initiated on March 22, 1990 by the Prosecutor's office of Kharkov region and on September 27, 1990 it was transferred for further investigation to the Main Military Prosecutor's office.
On September 21, 2004 the criminal case against officials of the NKVD of the USSR in committing of crimes foreseen by the paragraph "b" of article 193-17 of the criminal code of the RSFSR (1926), i.e., abuse of authority, expressed in the adoption of illegal decisions about the application of firing squad sentences against of 14 542 Polish citizens, was terminated on the basis of item 4 of part 1 of article 24 of the criminal procedural code of RF for lack of evidence of a crime.
In March 2005 the General Prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation received a request from the Polish party with the petition for introducing with all materials of the case.
In October of the same year the Polish side was familiarized with 67 volumes of the criminal case.
In November 2009 the General Prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation received a new Polish petition about familiarizing with all materials of the criminal case.
In pursuance of the instructions of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev as a gesture of goodwill on 08.05.2010 the General Prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation handed over the copies of the materials of the mentioned criminal case in the quantity of 66 volumes to the State Secretary, acting for the Head of the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland J. Mihaylovski.
The volume No. 31 of the criminal case was handed over on 08.05.2010 by the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev to Marshal of the Sejm B. Komorowski acting for the President of the Republic of Poland.
After this, by the Main Military Prosecutor's office there were made and presented to the General Prosecutor’s office of the Russian Federation copies of other 81 volumes of the mentioned criminal case which by the decision of the interdepartmental commission on protection of state secrets were declassified.
By the main department of international legal cooperation of the General Prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation in September 2010 there were transferred through the Embassy of Poland in the Russian Federation to the competent authorities of that country copies of 20 volumes and in December 2010 other 50 volumes were transferred.
The materials transferred to the Polish side contain: the orders about sending of prisoners of war, lists of military personnel sent to the board of NKVD in Kalinin (nowadays Tver) region, the protocols of interrogations and other investigation actions, the forensic medical expert examinations, acts of funerals and burials, the histories of diseases, death certificates, certificates of the issuing of bodies, newspaper publications.

In the General Prosecutor’s office of the Russian Federation it was carried out the transmission of copies of the materials of "Katyn" criminal case
