Visit of Russian military prosecutors to the Republic of Italy

1-4 July 2008, upon invitation of the Italian colleagues, a delegation of the Russian military prosecutors headed by the Deputy Prosecutor General – Chief Military Prosecutor Sergey Fridinsky paid a visit to the Republic of Italy.

During the visit, the delegation held working meetings with Chief Military Prosecutor attached to the Supreme Court of Cassation Massimo Nicolosi, First President of the Supreme Court of Cassation Vincenzo Carbone and Chief of Defence General Staff General Vincenzo Camporini.

Sergey Fridinsky told the Italian public prosecutors, judges and commanders about the history and structure of the Russian military prosecution authorities and their major activities.

The foreign colleagues showed a keen interest in organization of work of the military prosecutor’s offices during the reform of the law-enforcement authorities and the Russian legislation, change of the terms of reference of public prosecutors at the pre-trial criminal proceedings and peculiarities of preparation of public prosecutors for trails attended by the jury and the procedure of a disciplinary arrest in the Russian Armed Forces.

The Chief Military Prosecutor answered all issues of interest asked by the Italian colleagues and described in detail the work of the military prosecution authorities ensuring human rights and freedoms, organization of supervision over implementation of laws in different areas. Moreover, Sergey Fridinsky warmly thanked his colleagues for the opportunity to familiarize himself with the military justice system of Italy having noted that “the meetings held will further foster efficient professional ties and development of a dialog on a wide range of legal issues”.

When finalizing the discussions about strengthening of law and order in the Armies of both States, the Russian and Italian military prosecutors have agreed to elaborate a co-operation program including such activities as: exchange of experience in combating crime, protection of rights and freedoms of the military personnel.
