On June 11, 2008, upon request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, the competent authorities of the Federal Republic of Germany extradited Lithuanian citizen Vitalius Sokolovas to Russia.
In March 2004, in one of the cafés in St.Petersburg, V.Sokolovas trafficked a serious amount of narcotic drugs – 115.1 grams of methamphetamine; he also attempted to traffic 125.57 grams of the above narcotic substance.
Under Article 247, part 5 of the Criminal Procedural Code of the Russian Federation, the criminal case against Vitalius Sokolovas was considered in absentia with participation of his defense lawyer.
In September 2007, the Petrograd Regional Court of St.Petersburg found V.Sokolovas guilty of the crimes defined by Article 228, part 4, Article 30, part 3- Article 228, part 4, Article 33, part 4 – Article 228, part 4 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation as amended by Federal Law No. 63 dd. 13.06.1996 (illicit trafficking, incitement to illicit trafficking and attempted illicit trafficking of narcotic drugs on especially large scale). In view of the total number of crimes committed based upon Article 69, part 3 he was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment to serve his sentence at the high security correctional colony.
Since V.Sokolovas was arrested in Germany, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation submitted a request for his extradition in March 2008 to the competent authorities of Germany. In May 2008, the request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation was satisfied.
On June 11, 2008, Vitalius Sokolovas was extradited to Russia under the escort of the Russian Interpol Bureau and the Federal Penitentiary Service officers.
