In December 2007, Spanish authorities complied with the request of the General Prosecutorl's Office for the extradition to the Russian Federation of M. Babakehyan accused of complicity in the assassination of the governor of Magadan region.
The investigators believe that on October 18, 2002 M. Babakehyan and A. Zakharov,as members of an organized group carried out the assassination of the governor of Magadan region V. Tsvetkova, and the attempted murder of Deputy Head of Magadan region representative of the Russian Federation P. Shapki.
Accessory of the crime A. Zakharov by the request of the General Prosecutor's Office of the Russian Federation was extradited from Spain to Russia on 31.07.2007. Handing over of M. Babakehyan to the representatives of the Russian law enforcement officials is going to take lace in the nearest future, after that he will be taken to the city of Moscow and placed in pre-trial detention facilities for investigation.
Note: last year at the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation by the Spanish Ministry of Justice extradited by 4 times more individuals for the purposes of criminal liability in the territory of the Russian Federation than in previous years.
