A sentence has been passed in a criminal case on the smuggling of a large consignment of drugs from Colombia and Paraguay

The Moscow Regional Court has issued a sentence in the criminal case against a citizen of the Republic of Colombia, Carlos Alberto Muñoz Ramírez, under paragraphs "a", "g" of Part 4, Part 5 of Article 228.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal transfer of narcotic drugs, committed in large and especially large amounts, by an organized group), paragraphs "a", "b" of Part 4 of Article 229.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (smuggling of narcotic drugs, committed in large and especially large amounts, by an organized group).

The court established that Carlos Muñoz, as the leader of an organized group, in July 2016 illegally transported more than 2.3 kg of cocaine by air from Colombia to Russia, which was discovered by law enforcement agencies at Sheremetyevo Airport. In the same month, about a kilogram of cocaine was transported from Paraguay to Russia in a similar manner, which was discovered at Vnukovo Airport .

Carlos Muñoz has been wanted since 2017. After his whereabouts were established in Colombia, the competent authorities of that state granted the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation for his extradition in May 2024. In December 2024, Carlos Muñoz was extradited to Russia.

The prosecution in the criminal case was supported by a representative of the Prosecutor General's Office of Russia. Agreeing with the position of the state prosecutor, the court found Carlos Muñoz guilty of the incriminated crimes. He was sentenced to 19 years of imprisonment in a strict regime penal colony, with a fine of 900 thousand rubles.
