- The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation
Today, May 27, 2015, the first plenary sessions of the 5th St Petersburg International Legal Forum were held in St Petersburg.
During the sessions, Alexander Zvyagintsev, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, presented a report on The 70th Anniversary of the Nuremberg Trials.
He noted that this year is marked not only by the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism celebrated throughout the world, but also by a number of other anniversaries linked to the Second World War. These include, in particular, 70 years since the creation of the International Military Tribunal convenedin Nuremberg to prosecute the leaders of Nazi Germany, and also the 70th anniversary since the establishment of the United Nations, which was created to ensure international peace and security and promote cooperation between states. They are all, without doubt, landmark events that laid the foundation of the post-war order.
In his report, Mr Zvyagintsev emphasised that from the very beginning of the war, the Soviet leadership consistently and persistently called for an international trial to be held for the leaders of Nazi Germany.
Mr Zvyagintsev also noted that to this day, the Nuremberg Trialsare globally and historically recognised as the first and most important legal action of the United Nations.
