The Russian-Cuban Workshop on Interaction with the Mass Media in Order to Protect Human Rights Was Held in Havana

Havana (the Republic of Cuba) hosted a two-day Russian-Cuban workshop on Interaction between the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Mass Media in Order to Raise Legal Awareness of Citizens and to Prevent Offenses and Crimes.

The said event was organized under 2015 - 2016 Cooperation Program between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Cuba, which was signed in December 2014 by Mr. Yury Chayka, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, during his working visit to the Republic of Cuba.

The workshop was attended by the representatives of the Department of Interaction with the Mass Media and the Legal Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, as well as the representatives of the Interagency Cooperation Department, Human Rights Protection Department, Prosecutorial Inspections Department, International Relations Department and IT Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Cuba.

During the experience exchange, the issues of legal education of the citizens and formation of their negative attitude towards the offenses were discussed.

Particular emphasis was placed upon the aspects of legal education as a crime prevention tool. In addition, Cuban colleagues showed interest in the experience of cooperation between the Russian prosecutors with the mass media and the public, as well as the use of new information technologies.

The powers of the prosecution authorities of the Russian Federation and of the Republic of Cuba and the organization of their activities were discussed separately.

The next meeting of the prosecutor’s offices representatives of both countries under the Program will be held in May 2016 in Moscow. During the meeting, Russian and Cuban prosecutors are expected to share experience in improving criminal and criminal procedure legislation of Russia and Cuba.
