Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika and Prosecutor General of Denmark Jorgen Sørensen has met today in Moscow.

While welcoming his guest, Yuri Chaika underlined that international cooperation was one of the top priorities of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation. He expressed hope that the visit of the Prosecutor General of Denmark would contribute to the establishment of strong professional ties between the two Offices. According to Yuri Chaika, common tasks facing the prosecution authorities of Russian and Denmark such as fight against organized crime, terrorism, drug trafficking and other grave crimes will facilitate this process.

During the meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and his Danish colleague have signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor General's Office of Denmark. The Memorandum envisages meetings, consultations, joint press conferences and round tables to exchange experience and discuss issues of mutual interest.

The Prosecutor General of Denmark noted that he considered signing of that document “not as the beginning of relations between the two institutions but as a strong impetus that would bring them to the new level”.

The issues of extradition and legal assistance in criminal matters became a separate theme for discussion.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation informed that the working group on modernization of European conventions regulating legal assistance and extradition was established on Russia’s initiative in the Council of Europe. Jorgen Sørensen agreed with the necessity of such modernization.

At the end of the meeting, Yuri Chaika invited his Danish colleague to take part in the Conference of the European Prosecutors General devoted to the role of the Prosecution Service in the protection of human rights and public interests outside the criminal field. Prosecutor General of Denmark accepted the invitation with pleasure and, in his turn, invited Yuri Chaika to visit Denmark at his convenience and get acquainted with work of the prosecution authorities and the police.

Both sides expressed hope that today’s meeting and signing of the Memorandum would promote closer cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Offices of both countries and would serve as the first step to enhance the efficiency of cooperation.
