Today in Moscow Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuriy Chayka met with Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Denmark Jørgen Sørensen.
Greeting the guest, Yuri Chaika underlined that international cooperation is one of the guidelines for the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation. He voiced a hope that the visit of Prosecutor General of Denmark to Russia will serve for establishing of strong professional relationship between two departments. This, according to Yuri Chaika, is also furthered by community of tasks facing the public prosecutor’s offices of Russia and Denmark: fight against the organized crime, terrorism, drugs traffic and other severe crimes.
During the meeting Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and his Danish colleague signed a Memorandum of Mutual Understanding in the Issues of Co-operation between the Prosecutor General‘s Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Kingdom of Denmark. The Memorandum provides for holding of meetings, consultations, joint conferences and round tables for exchange of experience and discussion of questions, being of mutual interest.
Prosecutor General of Denmark marked that he considers signing of the said document «not as a beginning of relations between two departments, but as an impulse which will lead them at a new level».
The issues of extradition and rendering of legal aid in criminal cases became the separate theme of the discussion.
Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation reported that in the Council of Europe a working group on modernization of European conventions, regulating the issues of legal aid and extradition, was created on the initiative of Russia. Jørgen Sørensen acceded to opinion about the necessity of such modernization.
In conclusion of the meeting Yuriy Chayka invited the Danish colleague to take part in the Conference of Prosecutors General of Europe, devoted to the role of the public prosecution in the protection of human rights and public interests outside the criminal law field, which will be held in Saint Petersburg in July 2008.
Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Denmark accepted this offer with thanks and in turn invited Yuri Chaika to visit Denmark at any convenient time and to meet with work of public prosecution and police bodies.
The parties voiced a hope that the today's meeting and signing of Memorandum will allow to establish closer interaction between the offices of public prosecutor of the two countries and become one more step on a path leading to the enhancement of the collaboration efficiency.
