Meeting of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and the State Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of the Hellenic Republic

At the initiative of the Greek side, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika and Prosecutor General of the Supreme Court of the Hellenic Republic George Sanidas have met today in the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation.

The parties discussed general questions of cooperation including the fight against transnational organized crime.

In his opening speech, Yuri Chaika noted that “Russo-Greek relations have always been built on the solid basis of confidence and mutual sympathy between our nations and have truly had partnership character”.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation named cooperation between the Russian and Greek law-enforcement authorities in the fight against terrorism, human trafficking, illegal migration and other criminal acts as one of the main components of this partnership.

Noting the utmost importance of international legal cooperation in the activities of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, Yuri Chaika stressed that “at the initiative of Russia a working group has been set up in the Council of Europe to modernize European Conventions regulating legal assistance and extradition”. Moreover, Agreements on Cooperation with such countries as France, Italy, Great Britain, Sweden, Norway, Spain, Brazil and others were signed.

In his turn, George Sanidas thanked his Russian colleague for warm welcome and underlined that “after this visit cooperation will become more efficient for the benefit of our countries”. He also noted that “even in the hardest times of our history Greek people have always felt support from Russia”.

In conclusion, Yuri Chaika expressed his hope that “today’s meeting will lay a solid foundation for future joint activities. The next step of interaction will be the signing of the Joint Agreement on Cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the competent authorities of the Hellenic Republic”, the draft of which was handed over to the Greek side.

The presentation of the Greek law-enforcement projects is also planned in the Academy of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Russia during the visit of the Greek delegation.
