Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika has met today with Prosecutor
General of the Kingdom of Norway Tor-Axel Busch
In his welcome address, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation pointed out that “warm, good neighborly relations between people of these two countries have a long lasting history, and today traditional mutual sympathy, tight intertwining of their historical fates serve as one of the fundamental principles for close partnership of Russia and Norway in the XXI century”.
Yuri Chaika underlined that one of the most important components of this partnership was cooperation of Russian and Norwegian law-enforcement authorities in the fight against crime. According to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, “every year cooperation in this area between Russia and Norway becomes more tight and efficient”.
He also reminded about his meeting in October 2007 with Norwegian Minister of Justice and the Police Knut Storberget during which both sides agreed to develop and sign the Agreement on Cooperation between the two institutions. “At present, this work is almost done”, - noted the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation.
Today during the meeting, the two sides have discussed the organization of work and tasks to be addressed by the Prosecutor General’s Offices of two countries, strengthening and further development of relationships between them, including cooperation within the framework of the Council of the Baltic Sea States, investigation of economical crimes, environmental crimes including illegal extraction of aquatic biological recourses and issues connected with detection and return of proceeds of crime.
The parties specifically discussed extradition and legal assistance in criminal matters. Yuri Chaika pointed out that since 2002 and until now the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has received 19 requests for legal assistance in criminal matters from the Norwegian law-enforcement authorities and executed them. During the same period, the Russian law-enforcement authorities have sent 11 requests to Norway, 7 of which were executed.
Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Norway Tor-Axel Busch expressed his intention to enhance cooperation between the Prosecutor General’s Offices of Russia and Norway in the Nordic Region on interaction in the fishing industry.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation expressed his confidence that the meeting would further foster the efficiency of professional connections and development of the dialogue on a wide range of legal issues.
