Today, on 15 September2015, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, a member of the IAP Executive Committee Alexander Zvyagintsev made a speech within the frameworks of the 20th Annual Conference and the General Meeting of the International Association of Prosecutors (IAP) at the workshop held in Zurich (the Swiss Confederation) on the issue of ‘International Cooperation and its Limitations".

He spoke on the success and challenges of international cooperation of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, and answered numerous questions of the participants. In his speech, Mr.Zvyagintsev paid attention of his colleagues to the fact that people should not forget about their past when solving today’s problems.

Due to the celebration of the 70thanniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Mr.Zvyagintsevon behalf of the Prosecutor General’s Officeof the Russian Federation made an initiative to adopt at the 20thIAP Conference a special statement dedicated to the 70thanniversary since the beginning of one of the most important trials of humanity - the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg established for the trial of major war criminals in Germany.

The Deputy Prosecutor General noted that the Nuremberg trial was a response to the previously unprecedented atrocities of the Nazis and became the first experience in history when the international court condemned the crimes of a national scale– criminal acts of the ruling regime of Nazi Germany, its punitive institutions, as well as the number of senior political and military figures.

Mr.Zvyagintsev stressed that it was an example of how the major world powers, despite political contradictions and differences in legal systems, were able to combine their efforts to accomplish a common goal – an implementation of the idea of international criminal justice. As a result of coordinated activities of public prosecutors from the Soviet Union, the USA, Great Britain and France, a judgment of conviction was brought on October 01, 1946.

In addition, Mr.Zvyagintsev noted that at the initiative of the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Russian Federation is preparing a national plan of events dedicated to the 70thanniversary of the Nuremberg International Tribunal.

Moreover, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation reported that the next 2016 year marks 70 years since the commencement of the work performed by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, which operated in Tokyo and condemned the chief perpetrators of militaristic Japanin November, 1948.

Earlier, the Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Mr.Zvyagintsev took part in the meeting of the IAP Executive Committee, during which the reports of the IAP senior officials, including the Chairman and the Secretariat, were heard.

IAP is an international organization that brings together 250 thousand prosecutors from nearly 150 countries in the world. This non-political and non-governmental organization was established in June, 1995 at the UN Office in Vienna. The main reason for itsestablishment has been the rapid growth of transnational crime, in particular illicit drug trafficking and laundering of proceeds of crime. There was a necessity for a more timely and effective mutual assistance, asset tracking and other measures of international cooperation between prosecutors.
