Today in the city of Moscow on the initiative of the American party it was held a meeting of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka the Minister of justice - Attorney General of the United States of America Eric Holder.
The meeting was attended by the leading officials of the General Prosecutor's office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, representatives of the Ministry of justice of the USA as well as the Ambassador of the USA to the Russian Federation Michael McFaul.
Welcoming the guests Yury Chayka thanked Eric Holder for the visit, particularly noting that the positions of Russia and the United States have many points of contact in the sphere of fighting against criminality, the activities on protection of human rights which should be carried out on the basis of applicable international treaties and legislation of the two countries.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation emphasized that the legal assistance in criminal cases along with extradition of persons for bringing to criminal responsibility is an important element of cooperation between the two countries in the issues of struggling against criminality which does not acknowledge any state borders. It has been established quite an effective interaction between Russia and the United States in this sphere.
The parties also brought examples of fruitful cooperation in a number of criminal cases as an outcome of which positive results have been achieved. The Russian side has expressed willingness for expansion of such cooperation and make it of more constructive character.
In the course of the meeting the Russian side proposed to return to the question of signing of the Agreement on cooperation between the General Prosecutor's office of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of justice of the USA which would provide greater opportunities for interaction including in preparation and consideration of specific requests. And such a draft Agreement was submitted to American colleagues.
Yury Chayka noted the importance of the contractuall-legal regulations of the issues of interaction in the field of extradition by conclusion of a corresponding Russian-American treaty which will allow reaching a new level of interaction in the sphere of struggling against criminality.
The Minister of justice - Attorney General of the USA Eric Holder has agreed with the opinion that strengthening of the legal base of cooperation will contribute to strengthening of cooperation between law enforcement authorities of the two countries.
Both sides welcomed establishing of a bilateral working group on the development of cooperation including on decision of problematic issues.
In conclusion, Yury Chaika stated firm focusing on all-round deepening and developing of interdepartmental relations which will allow not only enhancing the effectiveness of joint work but also strengthening of cooperation in the field of protection of the rights of citizens.
In his turn, Eric Holder thanked Yury Chayka for the warm reception and the given opportunity to support the professional dialogue on the high-level and to exchange opinions on a wide range of issues.
