Today the meeting was held in the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation between Mr. Yury Chaika, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, and Mr. Andrzej Seremet, the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Poland.

Top officials of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation, Mr. Krzysztof Parulski, the Deputy Prosecutor General — Chief Military Prosecutor of the Republic of Poland, and Mr. Tomasz Turowski, a Minister Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary in the rank of the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Russian Federation participated in the meeting.

At the beginning of the meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation expressed the sincerest condolences to the Polish people, to the relatives and close friends of all those who died in the airplane crash near Smolensk. 'Like all Russian citizens, I experience a great shock and deepest sorrow when I learned about the tragedy — the death of Mr. Lech Kaczyiiski, the President of the Republic of Poland, and his wife, the numerous members of the Polish delegation who were flying to take part in the commemorating ceremony,' Mr. Yury Chaika said.

Mr. Yury Chaika told the Polish colleagues that upon the instruction of Mr. D.A. Medvedev, the President of the Russian Federation and within its competences, the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation is undertaking all the necessary measures to organize operative execution of all requests on legal assistance, received from Poland, in the criminal case, connected with the investigation of the circumstances of the airplane crash. Mr. Andrzej Seremet, the Prosecutor General of Poland expressed his gratitude to the Russian party for the active cooperation, specially noting that the representatives of Poland were granted an opportunity from the very first hours to take part in the work on the site of the tragedy and to conduct other investigative actions even before the official request was forwarded to the Russian party. He also underlined that the investigation should be as open as possible, and the conclusions about the reasons and causes of the tragedy should be made known to the public. According to Mr. Andrzej Seremet, the Polish authorities have already conducted a number of investigative actions in the territory of Poland.

The Prosecutor General of Poland specified that the investigations which are conducted by the Russian and Polish colleagues independently, are going on in parallel direction and emphasized that the Polish Prosecutor's Office would do everything possible to ensure that the investigation should go without fail and detect the reasons and causes of the airplane crash speedily. Mr. Yury Chaika supported the position of the Prosecutor General's Office of Poland that it is necessary to conduct thorough investigation into the criminal case, determine the reasons and circumstances of the airplane crash within the strict adherence to the provisions of international treaties and domestic laws of Russia and Poland, and he emphatically refuted the reports of some mass media that the Russian party was allegedly hiding some facts about the investigation of the airplane crash. 'Unfortunately, the reports appeared in some mass that the Russian party was concealing something. Such allegations are not true to life. Russian law enforcement bodies are conducting the investigation in the regime of maximum transparency,' the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation stated.

In the course of the meeting, the participants discussed the issues and prospects of inter¬departmental cooperation, including the conclusion of a cooperation agreement between the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Poland in place of the Memorandum on Cooperation between the prosecution bodies which had been previously signed between the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Poland due to the separation of powers between the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Poland and the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Poland.

In conclusion, the parties expressed their willingness to discuss constructive proposals, aimed at strengthening cooperation between law enforcement bodies of Russian and Poland.
