Today, a meeting of Mr. Yury Chaika, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, with Mr. Jagland Thorbj0rn took place at the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation.
Top officials of the Council of Europe and the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation participated in the meeting.
Welcoming the guests, Mr. Yury Chaika congratulated Mr. Jagland Thorbjorn on his appointment to the high post of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, wishing him success in further activities.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation highly evaluated the successful and mutually beneficial cooperation of Russia and the Council of Europe in the area of combating crime and also in the field of protection of human rights and freedoms and expressed hope for further fruitful development of these relations.
Mr. Yury Chaika highlighted the fact that the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation is actively participating in realization of cooperation programs of Russia and Europe, including the joint program of the Council of Europe, the Commission of European Communities and the Russian Federation "European Initiative on the issues of democracy and human rights for the Russian Federation for 2007-2009". In particular, the Prosecutor General of Russia noted that for the last 3 years more than 10 seminars were held in which about 600 prosecutors of different levels from all regions of Russia participated. Due to these events, Russian prosecutors acquired additional knowledge and skills in the sphere of application of European standards of human rights, including the European Convention on Human Rights and case-law of the European Court of Human Rights.
Moreover, Mr. Yury Chaika noted the cooperation conducted within the framework of the Group of States against Corruption. The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation is the head Russian authority for ensuring the participation in this work.
Within the framework of the meeting the issues were discussed connected with the improvement of work of the Consultative Council of European Prosecutors, the elaboration of Recommendation of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the activities of prosecutors outside the criminal law field, as well as modernization of European Conventions on Cooperation in Criminal Matters.
In his turn, Mr. Ja. Thorbjorn underlined the importance and topicality of the issues under discussion. He assured that in the future he will actively assist in developing cooperation with the Russian Federation, including in such fields as combating against terrorism and corruption, laundering of proceeds of crime, prosecution of individuals who committed grave crimes.
In the course of the dialogue, the parties discussed the situation in the Northern Caucasus and also the course of investigation of high-profile criminal cases.
In conclusion, Mr. Chaika reinstated a strong commitment to promote and develop relations with the Council of Europe in all spheres enabling not only to increase the efficacy of joint activities but also to strengthen cooperation in the sphere of protection of human rights and combating crime.
Mr. Jagland ThorbJ0rn expressed his gratitude for warm welcome and opportunity to exchange ideas on a wide range of issues.
