Meeting of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation and the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy has taken place

Today in the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation meeting of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika and the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy Angelino Alfano has took place.

Governing officers of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and of the Ministry of Justice of Italy, and also Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Italy in the Russian Federation.

Greeting guests Yuri Chaika thanked Angelino Alfano for visit, especially noting excellent organization of the Meeting of Ministers of Justice, Internal Affairs and Prosecutors General of the G8 states, which took place in May this year in Rome. “Questions, which we discussed – combating terrorism, transnational organized crime, working out of appropriate legal means to combat sea piracy did not lose their actuality till present time”, - stressed out the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation.

The Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy in turn agreed with opinion that topic of combating sea piracy non only hasn’t lost its acuteness, but became more actual. Angelino Alfano stated that from the moment of the Meeting in Rome Russia succeeded in making concrete steps towards establishment of the International criminal court on sea piracy. “We welcome activities of Russia in this sphere, and state that Italy is ready to fully support Russia in this matter,” – stated the Minister of Justice of the Republic of Italy. In the opinion of Angelino Alfano this matter is fundamentally important. He informed attendants that according to the surveys of the Association of Shipowners changing of naval routes with the aim of avoiding collisions with pirates will lead to multiple increase of costs connected with shipping of goods. “It is necessary to consolidate our efforts in the matter of establishment of the International criminal court on sea piracy” – concluded Angelino Alfano.

In the course of dialog the parties also agreed on opinion that higher priority spheres of Russian-Italian partnership are interaction of the law-enforcement agencies in combating corruption, human trafficking, illegal immigration and other criminal manifestations.

Yuri Chaika stated that they have build constructive relations with Italian colleagues, which promote effective combating of transnational criminality. He also highly marked results of co-operation of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation with the competent authorities of the Republic of Italy in the sphere of extradition. So in 2007-2009 Russian party forwarded to the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Italy 8 requests for extradition, in the same period 7 were satisfied. The latter decision to extradite to Russia in 2009 was made by the Supreme Cassation court of the Republic of Italy on 7 October this year in respect of citizen of Russia Alexey Kalinichenko, accused of fraud. According to information of the investigation, Kalinichenko in the period 2003-2006, acting with lucrative impulses, created financial pyramide, with the help of which by fraudulent means under the pretext of receiving big profits from speculations on inter-bank currency market “Forex” attracted and stole money of citizens of Russia, Belorussia, Ukraine, Germany, Israel, Kazahstan. Total amount of victims for the moment is more than 4 thousand, and monetary sum invested by victims in activities of Kalinichenko amounts to about 1 billion roubles.

Concluding he meeting the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation stated firm aim to thorough deepening and development of bilateral relations, that will not only let improve effectiveness of joint work, but will serve as a solid foundation for further joint activities.

In turn Angelino Alfano thanked Yuri Chaika for warm reception and possibility to exchange opinions on the wide specter of issues.
