PROSECUTOR GENERAL OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION MEETS JUSTICE AND POLICE MINISTER OF THE KINGDOM OF NORWAY

Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika has met today with Justice and Police Minister of the Kingdom of Norway Knut Storberget.

In his welcome address, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation pointed out long-standing “traditionally warm, good neighborly relations between the two countries” which are facilitated, to a considerable extent, by close position on major international issues.

He underlined that relations between Russian and Norwegian law-enforcement authorities could be characterized as strategic partnership. “Norway is our active partner in solving such global problems as terrorism and transnational crime”, said Yuri Chaika.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation also noted the necessity to conclude an Agreement on Co-operation between the two Offices and exchange of experience in the field of professional training.

In his turn, Knut Storberget underlined that the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Justice and Police of the Kingdom of Norway had common positions and interests. It was, first of all, fight against transnational crime, which could not be fight alone, drug trafficking, illegal extraction of aquatic biological resources from the Baltic Sea that caused billions in losses to both countries.

Yuri Chaika offered his colleague to co-ordinate positions on different law-enforcement issues and act together on the international arena.

The Minister of Justice and Police of the Kingdom of Norway noted that it was very important to combat together crimes connected with human trafficking. “It is necessary to enhance international efforts to prevent people from committing such crimes”, underlined Knut Storberget. He stated that among people who committed crimes on the territory of Norway there were not many Russian citizens and gladly noted that the dialog between Russians and Norwegians was mostly on cultural, tourist and universal levels.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation expressed his hope for further efficient co-operation with the Norwegian colleagues, especially in the field of legal assistance in criminal matters and extradition of persons accused of grave and especially grave crimes and also preservation of biological resources.

The two colleagues have discussed a future visit to Moscow of Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Norway Tor-Axel Busch. Yuri Chaika was confident that “the results of this meeting will serve as one more step towards further efficient co-operation between the prosecution authorities of Russia and Norway”.
