- The Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation
Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika has met today in Moscow with Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus Petros Clerides.
In his welcome address, Yuri Chaika noted the traditionally friendly character of the Russo-Cypriot relations ensured, to a greater extent, by their close positions on the main international issues. He underlined the relations formed between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus, which could be characterized with good reason as strategic partnership in legal assistance and combating crime exercising a salutary influence over the development of bilateral relations between the two countries including within co-operation with the Council of Europe.
Yuri Chaika highly appreciated the results of implementation of the Memorandum on Co-operation between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus signed in 2006. This document provides for co-operation in mutual legal assistance and extradition, organization of joint meetings and consultations to exchange experience and discuss issues of mutual interest. In the opinion of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, the conclusion of the Memorandum gave a new impetus to the relations of the two countries and raised the level of co-operation in particular criminal matters.
In his turn, Petros Clerides noted that Russia was a leader in delivering justice and underlined that “principles of fair justice are the reality of modern Russia”.
Moreover, Petros Clerides assured his Russian colleagues that “the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus will pay special attention to the close co-operation between the two Offices in criminal law field and will do its best to render legal assistance in settlement of criminal cases which are of particular interest to Russia”.
Following the results of the meeting, Yuri Chaika and Petros Clerides expressed their readiness for further efficient co-operation in major law-enforcement issues.
