On February 18, 2020, in Moscow, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Igor KRASNOV met with Attorney General of the Republic of Cyprus Costas CLERIDES.
The following persons took part in the event: Mr. Nikolay VINNICHENKO, Deputy Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, Ms. Elena KLEOPA, Head of the Criminal Law Section of the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus, heads of divisions of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, members of the Cypriot delegation.
Welcoming the colleague, Igor KRASNOV noted traditionally friendly nature of Russian-Cypriot political dialogue, including the relations between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Law Office of the Republic of Cyprus. The main basis for this is community of goals, i.e. ensuring the rule of law, protection of citizens, public interests, prosecution of offenders.
The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation thanked the Cypriot colleagues for their cooperation in legal assistance in criminal matters, as well as in extradition to Russia persons, who committed crimes. Such work results in ensuring inevitability of punishment.
According to Igor KRASNOV, exchange of best national practices of countering corruption by the experts of two countries during the round table held yesterday, will allow increasing the efficiency of cooperation in complicated matters.
He assured the foreign colleagues of the commitment to maintain a positive vector of development of practical cooperation between Russian and Cypriot prosecution services. The Russian Prosecutor General believes that existing trust relations and resources of strengthening of working contacts, underlying in the agreements between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the judicial authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, should be used for this. Therefore, Igor KRASNOV noted the possibility of creation and promotion of common stances on the most topical problems of international judicial cooperation on multilateral international fora.
In particular, this year there will be such an opportunity at the Conference of the Heads of Prosecutor’s Offices of European States. The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, together with the Council of Europe and the International Association of Prosecutors, is dealing with its organization. During the event scheduled for June 10-11, in Saint Petersburg, the northern capital of Russia, various aspects of the role of prosecutors in protection of individual rights and public interests will be discussed in the light of the European Convention on Human Rights.
Igor KRASNOV invited Costas CLERIDES to the conference and handed over the invitation for the high officials of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus. He stressed that a trilateral meeting on the sidelines of the conference in Saint Petersburg could be an important step to further increasing efficiency of efforts of Russia and Cyprus in tackling new challenges and threats and strengthening Russian-Cypriot friendship.
