Today, on 7 September, 2016, in Minsk (the Republic of Belarus) a meeting is being held of the Coordination Council of Prosecutors General of the member-states of the Commonwealth of Independent States

During the event, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yuri Chaika made a statement on the occasion of the jubilee date – the 70th anniversary of the judgment of the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg established for the trial of the major war criminals of Nazi Germany.

Yuri Chaika noted that the idea to establish the Nuremberg Tribunal was put forward by the Soviet Union which had once been our common state. The USSR leaders succeeded in implementing this idea despite the initial resistance on the part of the Allies of the anti-Hitler coalition.

He also stressed that the Nuremberg Tribunal, which is rightly called the “the Court of the Nations”, had a great influence on the political and legal development of the mankind. The principles formulated therein formed the basis of further development of international humanitarian and criminal law, contributed to the creation of other mechanisms of international criminal justice (full text of the speech can be found here).

At the end of his speech, Yuri Chaika proposed to the participants of the event to approve the statement and measures for its dissemination, expressing confidence that this will enable to curb cynical attempts to falsify history, to put victims and their executioners on an equal footing, to present Nazis and their henchmen as heroes (full text of the draft statement can be found here).

The meeting continues.

Among the issues to be discussed is the election of a new Chairman of the Coordination Council of the Prosecutors General of Member-States of the Commonwealth of Independent States.
