7th Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors for Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia to End in Sochi

The 7th Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors for Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia has ended in Sochi.

The conference gathered more than 120 participants from 35 states and 9 international organizations, including the United Nations, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Council of Europe, as well as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. The conference was also attended by delegations from the United States of America, several states in Latin America, Western Europe, Middle East, Africa, Western and South Asia.

This event became a significant step for the states in combating global terrorism and extremism. The conference reaffirmed earlier conclusions that effective counteraction of these threats was possible only through joint and coordinated efforts.

Within the framework of the debate on the overall topic "Combating Terrorism and Violent Extremism", the conference participants for the first time considered issues related to the role of prosecutors in preventing acts of terrorism and extremism, as well as the participation of prosecutors in the investigation and court proceedings in such cases.

The conference participants discussed conceptual issues concerning new challenges in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, including the ISIS activities, foreign terrorist fighters and lone terrorists.

The main part of the event was dedicated to the exchange of national experiences of prosecutorial participation in combating the aforementioned phenomena. In addition, the subject of discussion was cooperation in the field of information and methodological support, as well as cooperation in the field of professional training.

During the conference, there were numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings with the counterparts from different countries with the further discussion of issues on practical cooperation.

Today, the Program of Inter-agency Cooperation was signed between the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation and the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Armenia.

In addition, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka held bilateral meetings with the Prosecutor General of the Republic of Cyprus Constantinos Clerides, the Attorney General of the Islamic Republic of Iran Seyed Ebrahim Raisi, Chief of the Bureau of Investigation and Public Prosecution of Saudi Arabia Abdullah al-Sheikh Mohammed. The meeting participants discussed the issues of inter-agency cooperation.

Concluding the conference, closing remarks were made by the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Mr. Chayka. He noted that the Sochi Forum has facilitated an open dialogue on issues of such concern to the international community, contributed to exchange of experiences, promoted discussion of solutions of common issues, as well as encouraged establishment of the new and strengthening of the old professional and personal contacts.

Information obtained during the discussions will allow for understanding the experience of counterparts from other states on combating terrorism and extremism, as well as will contribute to the development of national prosecutorial systems.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation thanked the audience for their active participation in the forum and expressed particular appreciation to the members of the International Association of Prosecutors and the President of the International Association of Prosecutors Gerhard Jarosch for his significant contribution to the strengthening of professional interaction.
