Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka to Meet Heads of the Prosecutor’s Offices of BRICS Countries

Today, on November 10, 2015, Sochi hosted the meeting of heads of Prosecutor’s Offices of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) on the margins of the 7th Regional Conference of the International Association of Prosecutors for Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia.

Welcoming the guests, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Yury Chayka noted the unprecedented nature of the meeting, which was for the first time held in such format, as well as the importance of strengthening and further development of mutual cooperation between the Prosecutor’s Offices of the BRICS countries.

Mr. Chayka said: "While making the decision to come to Sochi, we all were guided by the intention announced in July this year by our leaders at the 7th BRICS Summit held in Ufa to jointly confront the threat of growing terrorism and extremism, to prevent the revival of the ideology of Nazism, as well as to mutually contribute to the fight against drug trafficking and addressing the issues of information security".

During the meeting, heads of Prosecutor’s Offices of the BRICS countries discussed possible areas of cooperation in countering new challenges and threats, ensuring the rights and freedoms of the individual. Agreements were reached to establish prosecutorial cooperation in the framework of this association. The meeting participants approved the Concept of such cooperation, which presents the objectives, main directions and organizational forms of interaction.

In particular, it is proposed to hold the meetings of heads of the Prosecutor’s Offices of the BRICS countries in order to discuss the most important issues of cooperation as deemed necessary, but not less than once in two years. When determining the venue of the meetings, it is proposed to take into account which country holds the presidency in the BRICS or is planning to hold multilateral international activities on its territory.

At the end of the meeting, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation Mr. Chayka expressed confidence that the decisions made would bring the cooperation of agencies of the five states to a new level.
