Meeting between Yury Chayka, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, and Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain

Today, on April 7, 2015, during a two-day visit of Mr. Yury Chayka, Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, to the Kingdom of Bahrain, a meeting was held with Sheikh Khalifabin Salman Al-Khalifa, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Yury Chayka thanked the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain for the opportunity to meet and high level of personal attention which the Prime Minister and the Kingdom’s Government pay to the development of relations between Russia and Bahrain.

During the discussion on cooperation in the legal field, the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation expressed confidence that alongside the Memorandum of Cooperation signed the day before between the Prosecution Services of Russia and Bahrain, entering into a bilateral agreement on extradition will also be an important step towards improving the effectiveness of joint efforts in the fight against international crime. This agreement is already being prepared for signing. Also, Prosecutor General of Russia expressed confidence that an agreement on legal assistance in criminal cases will be concluded in the near future.

Yury Chayka emphasized that the Memorandum, as well as the contacts established in the course of the meetings with the Minister of Justice and the Prosecutor General, would create a firm base for a greater level of judicial cooperation between the two countries. Yury Chayka underlined that signing of the Memorandum is only the first step on the path to cooperation between the two countries. He informed Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa that arrangements have already been made for the Prosecutor General of the Kingdom of Bahrain to visit Moscow in the autumn of this year, during which a programme of cooperation will be signed for the next two years.

The Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Bahrain thanked Yury Chayka for his visit, and noted that the Kingdom of Bahrain intends to expand cooperation with the Russian Federation in all spheres of activity. He called for closer contact between various government departments of the two countries, and more frequent visits from both sides to provide practical support to one another.

Both sides expressed confidence that today’s meeting will set a standard for the progressive development of Russia-Bahrain relations in general, and in particular in the legal field, and that these relations will continue to develop actively.
