Today, pursuant to the invitation of the Russian side, a meeting of the Prosecutors General of the States of the Caspian Sea Region has been held in Saint Petersburg.

This meeting was attended by Mr. Kamran Aliyev, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Mr. Kazem Jalali, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Russian Federation, Mr. Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, Prosecutor General of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr. Gizat Nurdauletov, Prosecutor General of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Mr. Batyr Atdaev, Prosecutor General of Turkmenistan.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation thanked the participants for the visit, separately expressing his gratitude to Mr. Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, Prosecutor General of the Islamic Republic of Iran, who took part in the event via videoconference.

Having emphasized the enormous strategic significance of the Caspian Sea for all five States, Mr. Igor Krasnov noted the importance of cooperation among prosecutors in this Region and joint activities pertaining to the environmental protection, which would have a positive impact on the unique ecosystem.

As a result of the event, a Declaration of the Prosecutors General of the States of the Caspian Sea Region on Cooperation in the Field of Environmental Protection and Use of Natural Resources of the Caspian Sea was signed.

The Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation said, ‘This meeting and signing of the document will lay the foundation for further interaction in the Caspian Sea direction in a five-sided format. I trust that it will be fruitful and productive.’

Having noted that the Declaration focused on the priority nature of preventive measures aimed at protecting the Caspian Sea, Mr. Igor Krasnov stressed that the Russian Prosecution Service had significant experience in the supervision over the implementation of environmental laws. The head of the Russian supervisory authority said, ‘This work is carried out by specialized environmental prosecutors. We are willing to share the experience of their work.’

With a view to practically implementing the provisions of the Declaration, given that the format of the meeting did not permit a detailed discussion of all issues regarding the protection of the Caspian Sea, Mr. Igor Krasnov proposed to hold meetings at the expert level early in 2022. Foreign colleagues supported unanimously this proposal.
