A person accused of attempted illegal sale of drugs has been extradited from Lithuania to Russia for the execution of the sentence

The competent authorities of the Republic of Lithuania have extradited Igor Zolotarev to Russia pursuant to a request of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation. He has been found guilty of crimes under Article 30, part 3, Article 228.1, part 4, clause «d» of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (attempted illegal sale of drugs).

The court pronounced Mr Zolotarev guilty of attempted illegal large-scale sale of drugs that he kept at the flat of his residence and at the garages in his possession situated in Saint Petersburg. The man did not complete his criminal intent for circumstances beyond his control. He was detained in May 2017, the drugs were seized by law enforcement officials during searches. The court set him a punishment of 13 years deprivation of liberty in a high-security prison.

As Mr Zolotarev had hidden from law enforcement authorities, he was internationally wanted on behalf of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation. In June this year he was detained in the territory of the Republic of Lithuania.

Afterwards, the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation sent the relevant request for his extradition for the purpose of criminal prosecution and execution of the sentence.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation, and close interaction established with the competent authorities of the Republic of Lithuania a decision of consent to the extradition of the culprit was reached.

Today Igor Zolotarev has been brought back to Russia under a special police escort.
